About Richard

I have lived in West Lavington since 1999 and represented the Lavingtons for two years on Kennet District Council before becoming a Wiltshire Councillor in 2009...

I am currently the Portfolio Holder for Education, Skills and Youth and am pleased to report that over 90% of children in the county are being educated in schools that are rated Good or Outstanding by Ofsted, which puts Wiltshire very nearly at the top of the national list. The proportion of students getting GCSE Grade A*-C including English & Maths is well above the national average. Almost all our young people go on to university or further education or apprenticeships or jobs so the number of young people who are not in education, employment or training (NEET) is very low.

In a former role as Portfolio Holder for Public Transport I worked hard to maintain and improve bus services in the area. I was chairman of the Community Area Transport Group which published the Devizes Local Transport Plan and I have supported the possibility of a railway station at Lydeway to serve the Devizes area. I am now a Director of TravelWatch SouthWest, which represents the needs of rail and bus passengers across the region.

I am committed to representing the views and concerns of residents on local issues. I actively supported the successful opposition to an unwanted housing estate outside Great Cheverell and have fought a proposed development in Market Lavington on highway safety grounds. I have also supported residents seeking to retain the village pub in Erlestoke and am working with residents and our MP to improve management of the Victoria Park estate by the Ministry of Justice. I am a Director of the Devizes Development Partnership which, inter alia, provides CCTV coverage in the town.

I actively support the work of the parish councils and write regular articles in the local parish magazines. I am Chairman of the Southbank Trust (a local charity), of Dauntsey’s Almshouses Charity and of the Lavington Track & Field Coaching Trust. I am a member of All Saints Choir.

In 2011, I led the successful campaign against the Boundary Commission proposals to transfer the Lavington & Erlestoke division into a new constituency of Warminster & Shaftesbury.

I am married to Sandra, who is a retired barrister. We have 2 grown up children.
